Brussels is willing to scrap tariffs on all industrial products, including cars, inside the trade talks in the United States,?EU trade chief Cecilia Malmstr?m said Thursday.
“We announced we are ready on the EU side to venture to zero tariffs on all industrial goods, however if the U.S. will the same, consequently it would be with a reciprocal basis,” Malmstr?m told the ecu Parliament’s trade committee.
“We want to bring down even our car tariffs as far as zero – if for example the U.S. does the same,” she said, adding that?”it can be good for us economically, too as for them.”
Malmstr?m’s comment goes beyond what was agreed in July in your joint statement between European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and U.S. President Mr . trump, which only mentioned eliminating tariffs, non-tariff barriers and subsidies for “non-auto industrial goods.”
Brussels and Washington are holding preparatory trade talks to define the scope connected with a potential future agreement. On top of a first meeting in Washington the other day, an EU proposal for including cars through the discussions was rejected via the U.S.,?POLITICO reported Thursday.
The EU’s car tariff of 10 percent is greater than the general U.S. auto tariff of two.5 percent, but America imposes a 25 percent duty on light trucks and pickups.
Malmstr?m insisted that this discussions don’t seem to be about “restarting TTIP” but shooting for “a more limited trade agreement.”
“Agriculture will not be in the agreement, nor public procurement because looks to today,” she said.
